Canonsburg Man Sentenced To Prison For Internet Fraud Scheme

United States Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan announced today, March 8, 2007, that Edward Semulka, a resident of Canonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced in federal court in Pittsburgh to two years of imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $4,933.75 on his conviction of wire fraud.

Senior United States District Judge Alan N. Bloch imposed the sentence on Semulka, age 41.

According to information presented to the court by Assistant United States Attorney Dennis P. Kissane, Semulka, from on or about August 14, 2001, to on or about January 22, 2002, engaged in a wire fraud scheme using the internet auction services known as eBay Auctions.  Semulka offered various high-priced items for sale on those services, including RCA DSS satellite dish receivers, but, after receiving payment from would-be buyers, failed to deliver the merchandise.

Ms. Buchanan commended the Pittsburgh High Technology Crimes Task Force, which is composed of agents and investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the United States Department of Homeland Security - Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office, the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office, Allegheny County Police Department, the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Ross Township Police, and troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Semulka.

Spam is unsolicited "junk" email
Spam is unsolicited "junk" email sent to large numbers of people to promote products or services. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. The reason spam is so prominent on the Internet is the fact that spam costs the sender so little to send; in fact, most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or their Internet Service Provider (ISP).
